<a href="https://www.blogger.com/goog_626524351"><br /></a>
<a href="http://www.chrisliszak.com/">www.chrisliszak.com</a><br />
<br />
Here you can get the story of my journey with felt and fibre, and see photos of art, wearables, and workshops. I will continue to chat here, but I hope this new website can add a new level of information to my profile....<br />
<br />
I am now about to attend a large artisan market in Niagara Falls this weekend. If all goes well, my inventory will take a big hit, and I will have a reason to happily felt through the coming winter months. And I also plan to teach a lot of felting workshops at the Fibre Garden.<br />
<br />
Here are a few photos of my latest workshop (three days of winter felt yardage to become a coat)<br />

I had a busy week. I made two new coats for my upcoming show November 22-24 in Niagara Falls.<br />
They just need buttons. You can see i am obsessed with black and white details at the moment!<br />

My coat workshop (booked through the Fibre Garden website) is full and coming up mid November. I will post fun photos of that three day event here, and announce my next workshop date hopefully in January. You can buy a finished coat.... or create your own!<br />

<br />
Thank you to all who came out to see me at the Etsy Made in Canada Day. It was a great day and I had enough sales to refocus, and start felting again with enthusiasm! I will have my next show at the <a href="http://www.handmademarket.ca/">HandMade</a> <a href="http://www.handmademarket.ca/">Market</a>, Holiday Event at the Scotiabank Centre in Niagara Falls, November 22, 23, and 24. Plan to visit this event with 200 artisans under one roof. Shop local and handmade this Christmas. <br />

A new season of felting workshops has begun! You can find the postings on <a href="http://www.fibregarden.ca/">The Fibre Garden website </a>under "workshops". There is a new Felt Art workshop, "painting" with wool and fibres. You can bring a photo you love, like the scene below.... Nature, scenery, landscapes, houses... Most outdoor photos. Bring your photo and I will guide you through recreating the image in wool, and also trading tips on how extra stitches can make the artwork pop!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Again, we will have the intense two day vest workshop. This one will teach working over a custom resist to make the seamless garment. We will use sari silk and fine merino batts and fibres to make it special. <br />

The classic nuno felt scarf workshop is back. Always popular, you can design colours and textures to make it your own wearable art, fusing silk fabric or silk hankies with fine merino wool fibres.<br />
You can never have too many of these!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a short, photo dense tutorial of a reversible wet felted vest. Basic felting knowledge is assumed, and this is mostly a guide for those who have attended my vest workshop and would love a visual reminder of the stages of vest-making.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You start with a resist, approximately 1.3 times the size you need to fit perfectly...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrgQpSLPjl373g7YBSAA_VJfRkPWd6LcXcPyGFTt3ckx5vqZUqTTvtykiCBBSlxRim7G8j9sKFWglRjRHE10zfLIscTvlNbBNBxXG7R97lTHEnNq_nKbe4lNWQYyW0lg4-LAvXYt5pN3oN/s1600/517E20A1-4C10-4B07-975F-1DB2668C4437.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrgQpSLPjl373g7YBSAA_VJfRkPWd6LcXcPyGFTt3ckx5vqZUqTTvtykiCBBSlxRim7G8j9sKFWglRjRHE10zfLIscTvlNbBNBxXG7R97lTHEnNq_nKbe4lNWQYyW0lg4-LAvXYt5pN3oN/s320/517E20A1-4C10-4B07-975F-1DB2668C4437.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To make it reversible, add some sheer silk fabric and maybe some silk fibre, and yarn, and other details... Think of the pattern as face down against the resist... Lay your merino batt on top of this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-Zzwx0B3HYgBGVW6uHlUFhMPe0Pgs5PIB3LlLHkkqiK98xYdB8qJ_bEtQdV11TTUUb1ie09xKLyPdGMMk9dWYdI-C3Zb7XyHXhouX84Ttg0kGz0O4kQBGHQG4Mgyhc7arJijMAzStzHTm/s1600/73526A5D-171D-450C-A8C8-E945FEBB8EDB.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-Zzwx0B3HYgBGVW6uHlUFhMPe0Pgs5PIB3LlLHkkqiK98xYdB8qJ_bEtQdV11TTUUb1ie09xKLyPdGMMk9dWYdI-C3Zb7XyHXhouX84Ttg0kGz0O4kQBGHQG4Mgyhc7arJijMAzStzHTm/s320/73526A5D-171D-450C-A8C8-E945FEBB8EDB.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, on top of the batt, you should add sheer silk fabric (here are two different sari silks, one in black with beading), also added are circles of merino top and wool and silk fibres centers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeukHf3gcipG0w1sVKBDl6CLED-w9El6Ij60DGSg5moSDS-St_nhG3BlOTDvhOC9UBxSSskWEAuyi-U5hecImkLfcEsXa1qGBx3W_kWCAx7KR5gUa0HcBHcYw3lbgDs8EIZMkH7rhyZogY/s1600/6D94CBE8-B862-4FB4-B92E-381C9F17BA55.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeukHf3gcipG0w1sVKBDl6CLED-w9El6Ij60DGSg5moSDS-St_nhG3BlOTDvhOC9UBxSSskWEAuyi-U5hecImkLfcEsXa1qGBx3W_kWCAx7KR5gUa0HcBHcYw3lbgDs8EIZMkH7rhyZogY/s320/6D94CBE8-B862-4FB4-B92E-381C9F17BA55.jpeg" width="240" /></a><br />
Wet the back with cool soapy water, and rub completely down. Cover with plastic and turn over carefully to expose the other side of the resist. Create your front right side with an outline of merino top. Decorate the under side with silk as on the back (no photo of that step) and cover with batt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtrzTi0Z5VU-SHmks4tAoeLb7glyLdvh123dkP_PEgKsxwe4aChKytIz0sl37Py9yDdkLDDI8_mq6S0kSdh_njsAiogyhkfTwx3HFx_xlT43gFI8PGG_CXI_2VWKAQvkT-12AiRGzIs1al/s1600/1D288F45-74F3-4340-A25B-0DDA30CFA92C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtrzTi0Z5VU-SHmks4tAoeLb7glyLdvh123dkP_PEgKsxwe4aChKytIz0sl37Py9yDdkLDDI8_mq6S0kSdh_njsAiogyhkfTwx3HFx_xlT43gFI8PGG_CXI_2VWKAQvkT-12AiRGzIs1al/s320/1D288F45-74F3-4340-A25B-0DDA30CFA92C.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold the hang over sides and shoulders over the new front batt, and trim the excess at the armholes.<br />
Go ahead and decorate this side with silk sari fabric and more merino top and silk as on the back.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCxiX35BZSXc-OXV0utkUWjlQuyqmIDozowJq_mPn4dxEHrL6eHKpTGZeiavmNeITKmpf3f1K3og-_oGxQwWZWfbECqBk6FeFH2nKRkBYnUjdCFhLKy2Qv6Jyk13fYKRhCG88iBTDiuImt/s1600/BF96A149-EF0F-4786-BC20-CE9E80972683.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCxiX35BZSXc-OXV0utkUWjlQuyqmIDozowJq_mPn4dxEHrL6eHKpTGZeiavmNeITKmpf3f1K3og-_oGxQwWZWfbECqBk6FeFH2nKRkBYnUjdCFhLKy2Qv6Jyk13fYKRhCG88iBTDiuImt/s320/BF96A149-EF0F-4786-BC20-CE9E80972683.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Wet down the right side with soapy water and cover with a smaller piece of plastic, just enough to cover just the right side. Rub down well. Then, over top of the new plastic, outline the left side and decorate the underside of the left front. Cover with batt, and sari silk. Don't forget to wrap the sides and the shoulders to the front side. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Wet with soapy water and cover the whole thing in more plastic... Rub flat to remove air and to start the felting process.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitMgeSd70zIB9Zr5TdsHLMdY6XcEfNxflD3VkNl2y8TruVxcKq9AkgvtvIsyUWHfkRT14gGeZI8E8YKpaED7fTs2Ebj-wO9NmBrkimurcOXIxgDwVewiUV77Y5tlHveNJWpWJXeAl6geLB/s1600/80EDAF48-7E32-4F6A-92A7-E62B14CFDBC3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitMgeSd70zIB9Zr5TdsHLMdY6XcEfNxflD3VkNl2y8TruVxcKq9AkgvtvIsyUWHfkRT14gGeZI8E8YKpaED7fTs2Ebj-wO9NmBrkimurcOXIxgDwVewiUV77Y5tlHveNJWpWJXeAl6geLB/s320/80EDAF48-7E32-4F6A-92A7-E62B14CFDBC3.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
And here are the finished photos of the vest... The "underside" as it was laid out against the resist...<br />

I wanted to make a few "rocks" for an art project, and thought it could be fun to show the process as a tutorial.... I made slightly larger ones (4-5 inches across) a couple of years ago for my baby grandson, and he quite enjoyed throwing them and fetching them all over my living room.<br />
Here is a photo of rocks piled together drying on a towel. Most are 2 - 3 inches long and less than one inch thick. For kids you want them thicker, but for mounting on a wall hanging felt display, flat is best.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJmvn6qOG1QNwDXxC8r3AN5pqj1xlC_dsX0cC6nKA_qt0sxr-ZNphU5-2cUSMF45grXLUtRbEksVJbjf6JhXjIV2lWkeAuqecPFzPlmf3TzEL2i18JJjrH9OpLbeePwQe0b4niZ4tyL0Wz/s1600/37406195-6383-4D48-8520-F8E0E8FB270C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJmvn6qOG1QNwDXxC8r3AN5pqj1xlC_dsX0cC6nKA_qt0sxr-ZNphU5-2cUSMF45grXLUtRbEksVJbjf6JhXjIV2lWkeAuqecPFzPlmf3TzEL2i18JJjrH9OpLbeePwQe0b4niZ4tyL0Wz/s320/37406195-6383-4D48-8520-F8E0E8FB270C.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
Start with a slab of foam, like you would use for seat cushions. You can find them at a crafting or sewing shop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0lO3PiEYyHR2o0OiQZGrkzyha2uHk0YXhDvxwputpcxlRxGJe4AB72t5oJC_JNuG1Qlk8BUnEvRHXYrcoxNpOJ3wFCkBD8wu_-jiiHjRArZTWOwGou1CbGeuPUV_klR0ZVYKAJ4n_osf8/s1600/E6A7650C-3789-41A3-ADAA-D0174E9CF19A.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0lO3PiEYyHR2o0OiQZGrkzyha2uHk0YXhDvxwputpcxlRxGJe4AB72t5oJC_JNuG1Qlk8BUnEvRHXYrcoxNpOJ3wFCkBD8wu_-jiiHjRArZTWOwGou1CbGeuPUV_klR0ZVYKAJ4n_osf8/s320/E6A7650C-3789-41A3-ADAA-D0174E9CF19A.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For small rocks, cut a rectangle about 1 inch wide, and 3 inches long, using the 2 inch depth as is. For larger rocks use 2 inch depth at your smallest side and cut 3 inches by 4 inches.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2JIUFnzIojN4TYkpFSaSURN4jL7ACQNcKJpotGpjn0sIqvkWXQLFy_5hC2rDDCNG0Pvm8ighTrOFaZ_m9FvG6B8l6ovBZjHX0pNnI9Sg_wo8Dyh_hNsR88SYaNlpQm9VTdPGJchWWHlNq/s1600/E360EEBC-E6CE-4730-83F2-7058DFA01637.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2JIUFnzIojN4TYkpFSaSURN4jL7ACQNcKJpotGpjn0sIqvkWXQLFy_5hC2rDDCNG0Pvm8ighTrOFaZ_m9FvG6B8l6ovBZjHX0pNnI9Sg_wo8Dyh_hNsR88SYaNlpQm9VTdPGJchWWHlNq/s320/E360EEBC-E6CE-4730-83F2-7058DFA01637.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
From the rectangle shape, use scissors to trim out all the sharp angles and corners, creating an oval shape and bevelling a bit of a curve to the edges.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVJhnlLS_73oewd32t-KhLTvGNKcs79JgNFI6quDLcIVfAyvrjyvx1tD577FoiDsQMwcXEOaDKKCxCO4NABdpsb3l7p10kUmCuLgldXcP8kjQUIUB5F5t7LndDS-gKmw586Vn0mlZlqmyG/s1600/75C8851C-9011-4EC4-A248-FB7C03A63ACA.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVJhnlLS_73oewd32t-KhLTvGNKcs79JgNFI6quDLcIVfAyvrjyvx1tD577FoiDsQMwcXEOaDKKCxCO4NABdpsb3l7p10kUmCuLgldXcP8kjQUIUB5F5t7LndDS-gKmw586Vn0mlZlqmyG/s320/75C8851C-9011-4EC4-A248-FB7C03A63ACA.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Lay your wool fibre in two layers, one in each direction on top of a layer of plastic, and on top of some bubble wrap. Use grey, white, brown and even some yarn if you like, on the outside of the rock to create more details. This one is just natural white.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQZuDHmA5z8KKGNZB_hpdupnvtdFLRssFDKmJLeiHiFvXMShSPYskTui9EFryZwornnhYiVVYhUOBlCJ8yr7DYBtLwFrjP_yzciSQToNyouhQngHnAJPHSZRL7o-T5MiyyMZ2ynlgHYdDi/s1600/2DCEB1F4-BBF6-4CD0-AD62-EADAE48C2585.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQZuDHmA5z8KKGNZB_hpdupnvtdFLRssFDKmJLeiHiFvXMShSPYskTui9EFryZwornnhYiVVYhUOBlCJ8yr7DYBtLwFrjP_yzciSQToNyouhQngHnAJPHSZRL7o-T5MiyyMZ2ynlgHYdDi/s320/2DCEB1F4-BBF6-4CD0-AD62-EADAE48C2585.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
Wet the fibre with warm water mixed with a bit of dish soap, and wrap evenly around the foam shape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg7aNUERCgZAGRMnslLHTlvh_-RU-opzprVfekR9b5RVpmCLc5pilDsEHFj7_2E3O_rRsGSfa7YBQOkTO9YclsG5nDHr65T0ux-fA_M536OLevgmO26-V9HEbKsYtXJzPjaXUTIrp6XWDI/s1600/F7B14FBE-1002-477A-B487-D357C5D9FAD6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg7aNUERCgZAGRMnslLHTlvh_-RU-opzprVfekR9b5RVpmCLc5pilDsEHFj7_2E3O_rRsGSfa7YBQOkTO9YclsG5nDHr65T0ux-fA_M536OLevgmO26-V9HEbKsYtXJzPjaXUTIrp6XWDI/s320/F7B14FBE-1002-477A-B487-D357C5D9FAD6.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Roll the plastic around the wrapped rock and gently rub the package against the bubble wrap. Keep flipping and rubbing in every direction, increasing the pressure of the rub as the fibre becomes more firm. Eventually, when the surface is fairly firm you can take it from the plastic wrap, and rub it in every direction directly on the bubble wrap, dipping it into hot soapy water if it feels too cool.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYJ0ACt2qXRhu9_BDOMhQ30ViZD8v5D5Y9_kT7hmJN8dXK9g1Rjrr_migkNw1zWaqWBEoxsvEuGF-ZJkGmcvLo1FJjdG7LEjXr3zIrwK4xQqUAXdmiEyqUJyqWwp3ftLOwCCtQUC__T5ND/s1600/7EAF0D53-B179-4239-A3C8-EF881DBAA297.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYJ0ACt2qXRhu9_BDOMhQ30ViZD8v5D5Y9_kT7hmJN8dXK9g1Rjrr_migkNw1zWaqWBEoxsvEuGF-ZJkGmcvLo1FJjdG7LEjXr3zIrwK4xQqUAXdmiEyqUJyqWwp3ftLOwCCtQUC__T5ND/s320/7EAF0D53-B179-4239-A3C8-EF881DBAA297.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Stop when the rock is soft but firm on the surface, and it has clearly shrunk to about 70% of the original size. Rinse in cool water and squeeze to remove soap and let air dry.<br />

The first is from my latest 2D / 3D art workshop, where students first made a wool "painted" picture of flowers in a field, then made a small vessel decorated to match the picture. You can see one picture has a bee in the sky and a bee vessel. These were made by a new student, who had never made any felt before! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZiZ8tu6PAuNNCvzmod6cMJQy6N0WOt5R1e7I88qPG8pURH_xg8w2mUj2-h7A3ctg5At17RwthMShZ9lIHPXcO2nqH4Su1Q-Wz7qpA8JXuT8nmai1KUeB0Ay7gG4oJelzy8zpkls0V3CEl/s1600/CA51E888-59AC-4A60-9631-9E66B8BEE1C7.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZiZ8tu6PAuNNCvzmod6cMJQy6N0WOt5R1e7I88qPG8pURH_xg8w2mUj2-h7A3ctg5At17RwthMShZ9lIHPXcO2nqH4Su1Q-Wz7qpA8JXuT8nmai1KUeB0Ay7gG4oJelzy8zpkls0V3CEl/s320/CA51E888-59AC-4A60-9631-9E66B8BEE1C7.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
Next is a small house and sheep wool "painting" using wool fibre, and prefelts, then wet felted, then needle felted and machine stitched to bring out the details. Sweet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The last three show the reverse order: Finished picture after embellishments with machine stitching and needle felting, Finished felted only piece, drying and waiting for further embellishing, and the bottom photo is the fibre layout, with prefelts, loose wool fibre, and silk fibres and yarn (just before I wet it and felted it to a firm solid piece of fabric).<br />

I am totally enthralled with pictorial fibre art, and will be making several of these to be offered for sale in some of my upcoming artisan shows. chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08530046359068388972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107163122867674012.post-78195633119376544362019-04-02T10:05:00.000-07:002019-04-02T10:05:07.034-07:00Photos of works in progress<br />
<br />
I have been busy in my studio, creating felt scarves and coats and vests, all in an effort to have enough inventory for the <a href="http://handmademarket.ca/schedule">Handmade Christmas Marke</a>t coming in November to the Scotiabank Centre in Niagara Falls. I have a large booth for three days of intense sales!<br />
<br />
So here are a few photos of work in progress.... The back of a nuno felt vest:<br />

Made with 60% merino and 40% hemp, the fabric is very sturdy. Perfect for a bag. The straps are made by knitting a 4 stitch i-cord, from hand spun merino/hemp fibre (same as bag).</div>

Here is a sneak peek at the next work in progress.... wearable art indeed!chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08530046359068388972noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107163122867674012.post-17662923662557446632019-01-13T05:48:00.001-08:002019-01-13T05:48:11.774-08:00New art project and Workshop PhotosWorkshops at<a href="http://www.fibregarden.ca/"> the Fibre Garden </a>are in full swing, with almost every weekend and some Friday afternoon sessions filling up fast. So I thought I should take a moment to pop up some photos of what we have been doing.<br />
First photo is a peek at my next art gallery project. It involves a big rusty chain, so after a few test runs, here we are! Six feet and eleven links of merino wool and steel... yes, steel, as in steel wool, actually felted INTO the wool. It looked grey against the natural white merino, but as it got quite wet during felting (and I left it wrapped in plastic for two days so it would stay wet a while), it rusted quite well, and the rusty water dyed the other areas. Not much pure white let now.<br />

The rest of the photos are workshop results. You can see scarves and hats and a teapot cozy. Nice work from my wonderful students. Many are starting to felt at home, so the joy is spreading and I could not be more pleased!<br />

Tutorial I remembered to take photos of my latest hat! Here we go<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPwQ5Cw3fJNs3hux9l_R7AI6ipAz3wzlAGw9VtXkcuMjxz7oheSDGM3qk5i6EpgokY3lHDvduchU6hUFPwFP_ziBTXWVKaJPJvLkEx_IIdspT-AhbnpWyLDbELuKOngaOcXzii0Eo-TAPz/s1600/0D337896-D127-4809-8EF4-D9670A95191D.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPwQ5Cw3fJNs3hux9l_R7AI6ipAz3wzlAGw9VtXkcuMjxz7oheSDGM3qk5i6EpgokY3lHDvduchU6hUFPwFP_ziBTXWVKaJPJvLkEx_IIdspT-AhbnpWyLDbELuKOngaOcXzii0Eo-TAPz/s320/0D337896-D127-4809-8EF4-D9670A95191D.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Starting with a plastic resist, I placed fibre over the edges in all directions, using black merino for the bottom half and medium natural merino for the top. Under the black bottom half I placed some black silk chiffon with gold embroidery (from a vintage sari I had in my stash). This fabric was placed face down next to the resist, then covered with the black merino top.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgeC78GeYuqjfcKb5yBTusRL5mwk4DBv0ZGwrMuwXkeMp916SoDoL89sJVxS__QpelImTuBBQJ2OEYP4kz8FVrcHPoAEOAPEhRw8omKqBXnM_jKQcpdNPbeohWCFup4BMdT49bOLgtKEt1/s1600/0DB9843A-7085-4B63-B46A-A966FD9F5882.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgeC78GeYuqjfcKb5yBTusRL5mwk4DBv0ZGwrMuwXkeMp916SoDoL89sJVxS__QpelImTuBBQJ2OEYP4kz8FVrcHPoAEOAPEhRw8omKqBXnM_jKQcpdNPbeohWCFup4BMdT49bOLgtKEt1/s320/0DB9843A-7085-4B63-B46A-A966FD9F5882.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
When covered with two fairly thin and even layers of merino, I added some fabric (black chiffon with gold embroidery) and some prefelt squares and some black roving and white silk.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After wetting and flipping, the over the edge fibre is folded onto the resist and the second side worked like the first. Notice the black fabric from the first side is smoothed onto this side, so that it will run from one side of the hat to the other.<br />
<br />
Here it is all tucked in and wet. Now it is rolled up and worked for a while until sturdy enough to full to size in hot, soapy water. After cutting out the resist, I take time to shrink and stretch and shrink and stretch, to make the hat round where it was flat. Stretching involves shaping over the hat forms and head forms I have. (and trying on my head too)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgHdWgVvSyHzvZcg-t7SPCd8a-pZaanBjZGWX1LzSSaSWiJvvWO7XEYfthoeU-CeKFqxmrYL5QRBPUuF4ulJZufCcFEQsdd9Q1tIPgh-IAA68uBk7NC4VJqQSJkR8hxREYwwZPqke6fU9T/s1600/6B30EC8D-6558-430B-A9E7-43D6D5A2234C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgHdWgVvSyHzvZcg-t7SPCd8a-pZaanBjZGWX1LzSSaSWiJvvWO7XEYfthoeU-CeKFqxmrYL5QRBPUuF4ulJZufCcFEQsdd9Q1tIPgh-IAA68uBk7NC4VJqQSJkR8hxREYwwZPqke6fU9T/s320/6B30EC8D-6558-430B-A9E7-43D6D5A2234C.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
Pins are used to hold the creases until drying is completed. You can see how the silk embroidered fabric details the brim when it is flipped up. I cut a cool and asymmetric shape in the brim and put a few pleats there. <br />

My first attempt at making a coat all in one piece with a giant resist. The first photo shows the resist taped to the wall behind the finished coat. I made separate pockets, and sewed them on after fulling and drying, and the collar was made to the prefelt stage and sewed on the prefelted coat, then finished through the fulling stage as one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitv2Cjlief6fbGZ912ISeLr3HEtuNoXKIuZzvAiFMQlu9OBN4p2Du1Mc2GX5JtqZgcpFVHqCSAyuUY1xQ62TP5vltf8MC9ewVIwd3ucW_IlNCJxrpQqY4bDDd5ft9_ZEr3G7mC6r7iTnH8/s1600/coat1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="240" data-original-width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitv2Cjlief6fbGZ912ISeLr3HEtuNoXKIuZzvAiFMQlu9OBN4p2Du1Mc2GX5JtqZgcpFVHqCSAyuUY1xQ62TP5vltf8MC9ewVIwd3ucW_IlNCJxrpQqY4bDDd5ft9_ZEr3G7mC6r7iTnH8/s1600/coat1.jpg" /></a></div>
Here is the front of the coat with the right front over the left front (thin plastic keeps the sides from sticking together. You can see how it is almost too big for my table!<br />

The only thing I would do differently next time is make the sleeve longer. I would like to have the option of cuffing the end. <br />

I have a new driver, and it needed a new golf club cover.... So I decided to make a felted parrot like my sweet little Aspen (photo below)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaeACQNwNXrUSpNqCfxUy2YnusQumfDcICKo1CicEj3PngCGEhXwbQJDcIJABC29uN0QrOUXAeR4LcF6EeLdBeT7DaKpFyUZtzw7OA5R00hIr6n-2VDeqlDi6xqQmirVIhg7n725J95c5a/s1600/aspen+golf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaeACQNwNXrUSpNqCfxUy2YnusQumfDcICKo1CicEj3PngCGEhXwbQJDcIJABC29uN0QrOUXAeR4LcF6EeLdBeT7DaKpFyUZtzw7OA5R00hIr6n-2VDeqlDi6xqQmirVIhg7n725J95c5a/s320/aspen+golf.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The golf club cover was made using a parrot shaped resist, and corriedale wool in two shades of blue and a pale pink. The "sock" part is the left over wool, hand spun, two plied and knit to match. The first photo shows the new cover next to the original <a href="http://chrisknitsinniagara.blogspot.com/2008/01/wood-hoods-design-for-these-wood-hoods.html">Wood Hoods</a> on my clubs. The knit pattern is available for free on my other blog<a href="http://chrisknitsinniagara.blogspot.com/2008/01/wood-hoods-design-for-these-wood-hoods.html"> HERE.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP-wce4-0gZyYoKTbttzpIdrsnfP0LYy4hVftxmvLPZxIE3ct61Y434J_N_5DbgWviiNKOlwyyvEMV-s_TanMsH2Hyc5d8IDkrycuocFuCmuDy5jOzVyjjuJzqHO8FUfr4drbF92Iec73Z/s1600/eeyore+and+aspen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP-wce4-0gZyYoKTbttzpIdrsnfP0LYy4hVftxmvLPZxIE3ct61Y434J_N_5DbgWviiNKOlwyyvEMV-s_TanMsH2Hyc5d8IDkrycuocFuCmuDy5jOzVyjjuJzqHO8FUfr4drbF92Iec73Z/s320/eeyore+and+aspen.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The second photo gives you a look at my ancient Eeyore club cover and my cute little crocheted beaver cover (on a utility wood). The beaver pattern is my own, but I don't know how to write crochet patterns. Sorry about that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFDL6lwzSK1aTZu3WqBoua8jD9x6lLab1scHaJU-i0Wqgq2DVfW5CxMIbgHTh107JtnYR1BMvX7hmEf-zPpNoXY3DvJGFCvrhllOWpUB8EMFM1vFdIRfMu0mwR0dHtQlUzY9x0G8Rcumfw/s1600/110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFDL6lwzSK1aTZu3WqBoua8jD9x6lLab1scHaJU-i0Wqgq2DVfW5CxMIbgHTh107JtnYR1BMvX7hmEf-zPpNoXY3DvJGFCvrhllOWpUB8EMFM1vFdIRfMu0mwR0dHtQlUzY9x0G8Rcumfw/s320/110.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It started with a sketch, of a large coat, that could be mounted to the wall with the fronts open to the back to display all the details in a wall mounted art coat. It also needed to be totally wearable.<br />
<br />
Then I set out to make lots of "pre-nuno-felt"... meaning I laid many beds of merino wool roving, covered with fine silk chiffon fabric in many bright colours, sourced from vintage saris. I worked them until the nuno felt was partially felted, but not near hard felted or shrunk at all.... Then I cut house shapes, and roofs, and windows and doors. The village was placed on another bed of merino in the form of a wool batt, and the sky, sunset and evening sky were all worked. The piece was quite huge, big enough to work as the front and back of the coat, from bottom edge to neck.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2RE702_HXMhP6BUfUWcIHe3mvl0AYsDrr-quHWLeo0kGulXZ0b7g2ipm0WOuuk81d4Q48mRElvgQDlnk_PoWLA6KbUgs3-J0PhD1dCjti7a6d3XUww7nMLqBqxjD3hbwRyFxBXhcsxPjV/s1600/105.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2RE702_HXMhP6BUfUWcIHe3mvl0AYsDrr-quHWLeo0kGulXZ0b7g2ipm0WOuuk81d4Q48mRElvgQDlnk_PoWLA6KbUgs3-J0PhD1dCjti7a6d3XUww7nMLqBqxjD3hbwRyFxBXhcsxPjV/s320/105.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is a close up of a couple of the houses... after fully felting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_rfCZ2n8eKH9aTqKlhTigiPGiJRvwklSVFUwwIsSVGh1ZbBLQ80a0g2voXrg1gWANmPbFywmx0kjjPpy2N4NLwCqLxpW7dZ94mM36o724W1GQkERMNsexDcXj9Qvb5V4B-o_pG8LT_71g/s1600/149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1199" data-original-width="1600" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_rfCZ2n8eKH9aTqKlhTigiPGiJRvwklSVFUwwIsSVGh1ZbBLQ80a0g2voXrg1gWANmPbFywmx0kjjPpy2N4NLwCqLxpW7dZ94mM36o724W1GQkERMNsexDcXj9Qvb5V4B-o_pG8LT_71g/s320/149.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
And some of the machine free style stitching to add details to the windows and doors.<br />
<br />
The last photo is the completed coat (still needing the detailed top stitching). You can see that I have added black sleeves with white stars, and just catch a bit of the collar that is black and curly locks in blue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5TSDD3HQ2gpzmYW7GhiOG7jd5E_gLyQF2ghYmuZCb6mZZaRIEeM6QRhr2qWlenWgi5UYhDbP32NJcB9rs7PwXaOLcA5R4QbjtLx9pviKKcdBCbmcVdOlT8AtJPTb22_cir37E2YKMxq1/s1600/104.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5TSDD3HQ2gpzmYW7GhiOG7jd5E_gLyQF2ghYmuZCb6mZZaRIEeM6QRhr2qWlenWgi5UYhDbP32NJcB9rs7PwXaOLcA5R4QbjtLx9pviKKcdBCbmcVdOlT8AtJPTb22_cir37E2YKMxq1/s320/104.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
More photos to follow, after all the stitching is done, hopefully displayed on the wall, and displayed as fashionable wearable art.chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08530046359068388972noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107163122867674012.post-84179826080622720952018-02-16T08:53:00.000-08:002018-02-16T08:53:19.562-08:00Tracy's CoatI have a special project to share. My friend Tracy wanted to make a coat. I prefer to make "yardage" out of felt, and custom tailor the coat with my sewing machine. With my workshop space and my assistance, she started with these lovely ingredients: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdaWT7xrPIi60GfRxgFh1jQ4CDmkkzNvkEbCl0pqh8hXu8WGwAM9bSzSuPcL6b1omAYYMOzymTzettQMQm8iz9XD_xXl8D9cV_twTp2O1rlE7g5tPjTu9C0Df7lLemvWMj5uKcNI5zn35-/s1600/tracys+coat+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdaWT7xrPIi60GfRxgFh1jQ4CDmkkzNvkEbCl0pqh8hXu8WGwAM9bSzSuPcL6b1omAYYMOzymTzettQMQm8iz9XD_xXl8D9cV_twTp2O1rlE7g5tPjTu9C0Df7lLemvWMj5uKcNI5zn35-/s320/tracys+coat+012.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Above you see merino rovings, vintage sari silk pieces, and a merino batt (for the base) in medium grey.<br />
The next two photo shows the layout of the "fabric" that will become the back of the coat. She laid out a layer of the batt, then various silk fabric pieces, and merino roving ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxlTLwq6w_7HMiptikMdxTFTQY-9j6-gw0e5EUCuFAtjLDHxEKICpJFSXHvqFCFeVdiwgAfvA7rqKBwPlgY6jFV_R3jBu1WlYnXwlhYbEs19W8RBvjTmhMeHfHfc0phoKzzDlsGSn-eBEo/s1600/tracys+coat+016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxlTLwq6w_7HMiptikMdxTFTQY-9j6-gw0e5EUCuFAtjLDHxEKICpJFSXHvqFCFeVdiwgAfvA7rqKBwPlgY6jFV_R3jBu1WlYnXwlhYbEs19W8RBvjTmhMeHfHfc0phoKzzDlsGSn-eBEo/s320/tracys+coat+016.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
then yarns and bamboo fibre and silk fibre, all in the warm autumn colours.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYnx0UKTYlbmewElGgVWE0v8TTK6OWCB9YZEWh4xGaVJVyP8YPFNHvXN_CJPzDb5Ho6EeydCyMewiVM69Ua6sXXGjtGdqTlkZYd9peRxnrmdTgEZxGDZ0-Q5Ae4jAnHVj5WBvofAiAW_eX/s1600/tracys+coat+019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYnx0UKTYlbmewElGgVWE0v8TTK6OWCB9YZEWh4xGaVJVyP8YPFNHvXN_CJPzDb5Ho6EeydCyMewiVM69Ua6sXXGjtGdqTlkZYd9peRxnrmdTgEZxGDZ0-Q5Ae4jAnHVj5WBvofAiAW_eX/s320/tracys+coat+019.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
And after felting the whole piece.... here is the back of the coat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For the third piece (the sleeves, and collar) I remembered to take a photo in the earliest stage. The grey batt, with the start of the neutral taupe merino. The whole thing is covered with taupe before adding the sari fabric, then the other colours and details.<br />

On the last day, after all pieces were dried and steamed with the iron, we cut the coat pattern, and sewed the seams for a perfect fit for Tracy. Four different buttons were spaced along the front, and four secured button holes created. The collar can be up or down, and the cuffs of the sleeves are turned up to show pattern on the underside. Nice details.<br />

I have a few photos of my latest nuno felt coat. The first shows the thin layer of merino fibre, laid in all directions (but only one layer) over my large table. This size will make a perfect piece for the back, then I repeat for both fronts, then a slightly smaller piece for the sleeves and collar and pockets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I like to make yardage and tailor the coat to fit with set in sleeves, and a curved collar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG0Q8ZHgD31ZYwYeo4bdvUAObfKKKQhDa6Zn4A8ckr5aybtLq3czG1LyrgAxXN6_ww5ZftrMeAZW09fbWIfXiZW2410xCjLci4NDCjIaJe6oc2V1dFKMWxxksm0qQ1MRtOWuFQP6szjkI3/s1600/177.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG0Q8ZHgD31ZYwYeo4bdvUAObfKKKQhDa6Zn4A8ckr5aybtLq3czG1LyrgAxXN6_ww5ZftrMeAZW09fbWIfXiZW2410xCjLci4NDCjIaJe6oc2V1dFKMWxxksm0qQ1MRtOWuFQP6szjkI3/s320/177.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
This is the end result of the first piece, the back. It ended up nice and thin, but alas, it had a hole in one spot. So here are a few photos of the repair job, using a bit more merino wool, and a hand sander with polar fleece instead of sand paper, to quickly felt the hole closed. A quick rinse and rub with hot then cold water has it repaired! <br />

And the finished coat. Nice and light... the whole thing weighs just 320 grams, and it warm enough for mild winter days or spring and fall. The surface has silk chiffon from three different vintage saris, laid over the merino base, with yarn and rayon and hemp fibres to add more detail.<br />

I add an extra piece of felt to the sewn button holes to make them extra sturdy and reduce stretching of the button hole. <br />

For months I used large saris to make scarves, coats, vests and jackets, but tossed the small scraps in a bin. Here is how to use them up!<br />
<br />
Lay out your scraps in a somewhat rectangular (scarf) pattern. You can see some of the scraps overlap, but there are still gaps. That's OK.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-tZ6QEXW5Dlyw5pRRzxNZVDzb_hdfxSs9aLgf5gFDBsDT-Utb136E_wARA9vzE_VDKRvL-dVx_LxAQm2p1lei7Vpj_bsBvsJnWzzH7QQJcMv17ExlKBbBCZzqJRJ5BJMeKeKGiimK_LOh/s1600/352.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-tZ6QEXW5Dlyw5pRRzxNZVDzb_hdfxSs9aLgf5gFDBsDT-Utb136E_wARA9vzE_VDKRvL-dVx_LxAQm2p1lei7Vpj_bsBvsJnWzzH7QQJcMv17ExlKBbBCZzqJRJ5BJMeKeKGiimK_LOh/s320/352.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Cover the edges with merino roving in thin long strands. Where the gap is tiny, place roving from one side to the other over all edges. Where the gap is large, make an intentional "negative space" by covering the edges, then criss cross strips of roving to hold it together. Also decorate the large silk spaces with more roving, and silk, and other fibres.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxRc2AhB497gKiHW8EgnnennmbJ_WWw_K2Fj7jbpK1lW2u4mIJJAIkT1OKJPhG2sEdgQ2IlK4fff_384SYgit7sBrALzQdnGUz5KrhoX5qchXQxB78zVZdeUUSKZlW_KGzTrhbGdXeam4H/s1600/353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxRc2AhB497gKiHW8EgnnennmbJ_WWw_K2Fj7jbpK1lW2u4mIJJAIkT1OKJPhG2sEdgQ2IlK4fff_384SYgit7sBrALzQdnGUz5KrhoX5qchXQxB78zVZdeUUSKZlW_KGzTrhbGdXeam4H/s320/353.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
To make sure it all stays really well, I wet and flip the pirce and lay some roving on the other side to sandwich the edges between two layers of roving. (here I skip photos of the wet, and roll, and roll, and roll, then hot water squish and throw...)<br />
<br />
and here is the end result! Several different pieces of blue sari, with cool intentional holes.<br />

One piece of sari had embroidery and beads, so I made sure not to cover that with wool.<br />

I found a lovely shaped glass vase at the thrift store. Then made a vessel with spikes (black and grey) and strands (brown and silk). Cutaways and nunofelt beaded silk sari fabric covered the surface. After working it to a strong felt, I shaped it over the glass and used the strands to wrap the upper part tight to the neck of the vase. I loved the result!<br />

I wanted to make a long nuno felt shawl. As you can see it extends about 24 inches past the end of my table. I used a long enough plastic wrap below and went ahead and started laying the wool roving and pre-felt details on the top half....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7HeHafFhgPx0ynAEQFuQzprUxb_AXuFAYdqoMjk2DxAj28u19sgFB9_-Fd8VYmS3D8L56tpXK5U6CnXnKnzuQj_hC0iS4eKR3fx9-KJcgUQwTZqV63LwQCauBDNoCJmzOi4j0zoxyhMti/s1600/031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7HeHafFhgPx0ynAEQFuQzprUxb_AXuFAYdqoMjk2DxAj28u19sgFB9_-Fd8VYmS3D8L56tpXK5U6CnXnKnzuQj_hC0iS4eKR3fx9-KJcgUQwTZqV63LwQCauBDNoCJmzOi4j0zoxyhMti/s320/031.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Then I wet it down and covered it with half the top plastic. After rubbing it a bit and making sure it was smooth with no air trapped there, I folded enough of the wet half over, to pull the dry half onto the table. Now I can lay out the wool and details here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK3hxTXMeem6vYXvsZs2P5fJuHAN3yRNvjJhu9yYZdxXrF3dM9CddKZ3gJMu7NLScd_RLiubb94dQ3d9UdXvAXAwMLzK8al65Yjox6gJswUmwr9Ho_l1sBFQwv5OfGYhwuIkO1Y62YJMos/s1600/033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK3hxTXMeem6vYXvsZs2P5fJuHAN3yRNvjJhu9yYZdxXrF3dM9CddKZ3gJMu7NLScd_RLiubb94dQ3d9UdXvAXAwMLzK8al65Yjox6gJswUmwr9Ho_l1sBFQwv5OfGYhwuIkO1Y62YJMos/s320/033.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I pulled the rest of the plastic over the wet second half and smoothed it out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEise-FFxJ6dK0fhNxR1iC9JFkxzulK1Oy6g85HrIbSOYYH8U4QuRC9VPyTApxx6C0wqQuVAIohiUCo2IBF1HDnUiC3pipCyGQ2ypi3FsNmBC9c8G8yxzAo5Hj65WNxvKCNtsXMScWOYkl5M/s1600/034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEise-FFxJ6dK0fhNxR1iC9JFkxzulK1Oy6g85HrIbSOYYH8U4QuRC9VPyTApxx6C0wqQuVAIohiUCo2IBF1HDnUiC3pipCyGQ2ypi3FsNmBC9c8G8yxzAo5Hj65WNxvKCNtsXMScWOYkl5M/s320/034.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Carefully folding, I flipped the whole thing over and uncovered the first half (other side) to work a bit of merino on the flip side. Then I covered it again and slid the second half up to do the same there. All details in place and wet with soapy water. Just had to roll up and beat it up a bit, and wash it out and dry....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgn7RVVR5Fz5SR6MSYwiQjL2ENqWzzJ8ZrrBTUD21eHt_lGU8rV9a0aIx_n8cBRLXHQMJb8c2lbhUPk6VG0w3RaT8-_oOa7e2X4lbq34NHeItzMFS7GWVm1KXO0RF8Bh-CqsLaj8aclVE0/s1600/035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgn7RVVR5Fz5SR6MSYwiQjL2ENqWzzJ8ZrrBTUD21eHt_lGU8rV9a0aIx_n8cBRLXHQMJb8c2lbhUPk6VG0w3RaT8-_oOa7e2X4lbq34NHeItzMFS7GWVm1KXO0RF8Bh-CqsLaj8aclVE0/s320/035.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
And tah dah! A lovely long nuno felt shawl...<br />

I decided it was too long to wait until Fall to do more felting workshops, and since my new studio is big and cool, even on summer days, I am running a few this summer. The first was yesterday with three large nuno felted scarves. Lovely black, grey, cream and white shawls, a full six feet long!<br />

I have a glass vase as the shaper inside, and may keep it there so I can put cut flowers into this, but really it will stand on its own now that it has dried.<br />
